Preparing for the 11+?

Practice, practice, practice. Preparing for a grammar school place may take up lots of time. Students will need to be 'exam-ready' on topics that they may not yet have covered in school and so preparations at home are an essential part of preparing for the 11+. Tuition is not a substitution for doing the work, it will just guide the work to get the best results from it. See below for links to the materials our students use for their 11+ preparations.

Different levels of 11+ exam

There are different levels of 11+ paper. Independent schools may use the ISEB to provide 11+ papers but they may instead choose to construct their own papers. There is no national paper for grammar schools. There are 163 grammar schools in England, many schools choose to use papers produced by CEM or GL assessments (which means they sit the same paper for entry) but there are a large number of schools using their own papers. As a result the levels of the 11+ paper can vary vastly.

Through my career working in both the secondary and primary sector and having prepared countless students for 11+ for independent and grammar school entry since 2008, I have amassed an enormous amount of resources specifically on the market to help students pass their 11+.

Whilst the majority of students we prepare for 11+ exams are for the CSSE consortium (a consortium looking after 10 schools in Essex), we have supported students from a multitude of schools and had to source the most appropriate materials to aid their journeys to achieve the schools of their choice.

These days, whilst we still continue to author a large proportion of our own resources, we make recommendation to our our students to use specific resources and the best ones are being shared here.

Please note that whilst we use affiliate links to the products listed below, these are products that we currently use with our own students to prepare for private school and grammar school entrance exams.

Maths 11+ preparation materials

Alongside the 11+ preparations we recommend that students work through the Schofield and Sims Mental arithmetic series of books. These books focus heavily on the four operations and help raise skills with maths as well as their recall of methods. We recommend beginning at the beginning and working through all 6 in the series before they complete their exams.
